UV conquers Ateneo, Springdale

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE, Cebu City (15 August 2011)University of the Visayas started to rock the boat and make its participation felt in the BTC Cup smashing to pieces separate teams here last Sunday, Aug. 14.

The young Lancers also zoomed up the top spot in Division C at 12-under when they defeated the two top-seeded teams in the 3-on-3 hoopfest presented by Thirsty and Dimsum Break.

Lyder Kent Canieso led the young UV squad producing 13 total points in both games, including a massacre of PAREF Springdale School – Team A, 11-2.

The players of coach Jay Mar Canoy later crushed his former padawans in Sacred Heart School (SHS) Ateneo de Cebu – Team B, 7-4, and finished the day with a 4-0 win-loss card.

SHS-B dropped to second spot, sharing it with PAREF-A with a 3-1 record after the Titans managed a win against Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS), 4-2.

In the other 12-under games, Sotero B. Cabahug (SBC) Forum for Literacy stayed at the top spot in Division A, sharing it with Southwestern University (SWU) with a 3-0 record.

The Forum players of coach Ain Latonio contained Bright Academy, 11-5, with Daniel Selpa (at right, guarding BA’s Tatoy #11) leading with six points in their game of the series backed by Cherifer 10-22 “Tangkad Sagad” Growth Vitamins of InterMed Marketing Philippines.

SWU easily stayed in the top spot by way of a simple default as the players of Centre for International Education (CIE) flew to Singapore.

Shootout

In the 10-under card, Team B of St. Paul Learning Center (SLPC) gained advantage to enter the playoff of the games backed by Nike after defeating SHS-Team B, 8-3.

This after the lone PCGS Blue Lions team later bowed to the same Atenean Team B, 4-5, as the lone SIPS Tamaraws 10-under team won against SHS-Team A, 3-2.

Even if SPLC-A had no game last Sunday, the young Paladin Knights stayed on top with a 4-0 win-loss card in the single division age category.

SHS-B remained at second berth with a 4-2 card, and SPLC-B at the third spot with a 3-1 record. SIPS climbed up to fourth with a 2-2 card, as PCGS dropped to fifth with a 2-3 record in this tournament that Robinson’s Supermarket, Nature Spring and Holy Kettle Corn are supporting.

Meanwhile, BTC Cup organizers bared that 16-under games not played during torrential rains last Sunday will be played through a shootout at 11:30AM this Saturday.

Some Aug. 20 scheduled games got played yesterday, Aug. 14, as the teams were at BTC despite the mid-morning downpour, giving enough time for the shootout that will make up for the missed games and complete the elimination round.

The BTC Cup continued on its third year molding future basketball superstars with the support also of Optical Adult & Child, the distributor based in BTC of original sunglasses by Oakley, Tag Heuer, Levi’s, Giordano and Silhouette.
