Titans survive in overtime, as Tamaraws prey on Eagles

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE, Cebu City (13 August 2011, 1800H)PAREF Springdale School survived in separate overtime games as San Isidro Parish School (SIPS) frustrated Sacred Heart School (SHS) Ateneo de Cebu in different encounters at 16-under in the 3rd BTC Cup this morning.

The Springdale Titans’ Team A first edged Team B of Cebu Cherish School (CCS), 9-8, after two extended periods with Paolo Baltazar making the winning goal in the shootout.

The Team B of the PAREF squad later outsmarted Team B of Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS), 10-8, with the back-to-back goals of Zach Elisha Go and Amiel Villegas.

Meanwhile, the SIPS Isidorian Tamaraws prevented any extension at the buzzer in separate back-to-back games with the SHS-Ateneo Magis Eagles in the series here at Banilad Town Centre.

Even at 8 in the last seconds, Jonathan Tanghal suddenly launched a bomb from beyond the arc giving SIPS’ Team B the win against SHS Team A, 10-8.

Down by a point also in the last seconds, Mark Joseph Laurente threw his own bomb from beyond the arc for SIPS Team A that shocked SHS Team B, 7-6.

Momentum

The 14-under herds of the SIPS Isidorian Tamaraws, however, suffered back-to-back losses and failed to seal their leads in separate divisions.

St. Alphonsus Catholic School (SACS) grabbed the lead from SIPS Team B in Division A with an overwhelming win, 9-2, disappointing coach Virgo Godinez.

Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC) also overtook SIPS Team A as the topseed in Division B by outwitting the team of last year’s 12-under Most Valuable Player (MVP) Justin Riner Ramas, 10-8.

SACS now holds a 4-0 win-loss card with SIPS-B a 3-1 record in Division A, while CIC is now at 3-0 with SIPS-A at 3-1.

CIC at 12-under also gained momentum in staying as the topseed in Division B after preventing the Magis Eagles Team A from flying, 8-2.

But the Ateneans’ Team B soared higher as true Magis Eagles in Division C, as they grabbed the PCGS Blue Lions by their claws, 5-2.

Trebuchet

Also yesterday, St. Paul Learning Center (SPLC) Paladins (Team A) reigned supreme in the 10-under category after crushing two separate teams.

The young knights and foremost warriors of Charlemagne’s medieval court first massacred the PCGS Blue Lions, 12-2, then outflanked the SIPS Tamaraws, 7-6.

Sir Joshua Balangkig led in the jousting spree marking 11 total points, backed by successive trebuchet shots by Sir Ray Orville Ybañez scoring 8 points.

The BTC Cup has been on its third year and is now Cebu’s premier 3-on-3 inter-school basketball tournament with the consistent support of Thirsty, Dimsum Break and Nike Athletic Club.

The series is also backed by Robinson’s Supermarket, Nature Spring, Optical Adult & Child, Holy Kettle Corn, and Cherifer PGM 10-22 “Tangkad Sagad” Growth Vitamins of InterMed Marketing Philippines.

CIC, Titans, Magis Eagles to keep lead

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE, Cebu City (13 Aug. 2011)Elementary division leaders in the 3rd BTC Cup are bent on keeping their advantage as they face separate foes here this weekend.

Early 12-Under Division A top seed PAREF Springdale School – Team B will do so to keep the Titans’ honor as 12-under champions, especially that the same players compose last year’s 10-under champion team.

As last year’s 10-Under MVP, Giles Nathan Benedicto carries the pressure but has wingman Sean Quitevis to bank on for support in the games presented by Thirsty and Dimsum Break.

It may not be that easy for them as coach Ayn Latonio is bent on grabbing the lead for Sotero B. Cabahug – Forum for Literacy during their 8:45AM encounter Saturday.

The boys of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC), after their virtual massacre of two separate teams last week, will keep the momentum as they face Team A of Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu in Division B.

But assistant coach Richard Tan, Jr. will make sure his Magis Eaglets will clip CIC’s main gunners Christopher Go and Zandyll Gomonit to make a statement in the league backed by Nike and Robinson’s Supermarket.

Jousting

In Division C, the Ateneans’ Team B will rally around Jao Patrick Celerinos to keep their lead as they face two tough assignments.

They will first deal with Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS) on Saturday, then with the University of the Visayas (UV) on Sunday in the series sponsored by Cherifer Growth Vitamins and Nature Spring.

In the 10-Under card, the first squad of St. Paul Learning Center (SPLC) will also keep its record immaculate as the young Paladins of Charlemagne’s Court tackle two assignments today.

The Paladins will rely on the back-to-back jousting spree of Ray Orville Ybañez and Joshua Balangkig as they battle the young knights of St. Ignatius Loyola in SHS-Ateneo 1 and the PCGS Blue Lions.

The 3rd BTC Cup is also sponsored by Holy Kettle Corn and Optical Adult and Child, Cebu’s leading dealer of sunglasses by Oakley, Tag Heuer, Levi’s, Giordano and Silhouette.
