League levels playing field

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE, Cebu City (28 July 2011)Organizers of the 3rd BTC Cup yesterday decided to cut the number of entries in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament to “level the playing field” here next month.

From 85 teams that 21 schools submitted, they trimmed the number down to 68 as they decided to limit the number of entries to only two teams from every school in every age category.

As at least six schools submitted more than two teams in at least one age category, a total of 17 teams had to be filtered, according to Cerwin T. Eviota, the tournament commissioner.

“It was necessary for us to carry it out to provide an environment in which all participating schools in the league are given an equal opportunity as well as ability to compete,” he said.

As a result, there will now be nine teams competing at 10-under, 19 teams at 12-under, 14 teams at 14-under, and 26 teams at 16-under, he disclosed.

Also, while there will only be one bracket at 10-under, there will be three brackets at 12-under, two at 14-under, and four at 16-under, added Eviota, also the marketing director of BTC.

As now projected, there will be a total of 201 games that some 272 players will play during the elimination rounds in the weekends of Aug. 6 and 7, 13 and 14, and 20 and 21.

Refund

All games will begin at 7:15AM, as some coaches have requested, and end by 12NN. There will be no more games in the afternoon.

Eviota said they made the changes for this year based on the feedback they received after the first and second editions of the series in 2009 and 2010.

“We were a bit lenient last year, but we have realized that we now need to do it,” he said.

Registration fees paid for the filtered 17 teams will be refunded, he disclosed.

Meanwhile, the organizers will again meet with the coaches and the schools’ sports coordinators for a final briefing on Friday, July 29, 3PM, at Dimsum Break BTC.

Thirsty Fruit Juices & Shakes, Dimsum Break and Nike Athletic Club have been behind the BTC Cup since 2009, with Robinson’s Supermarket, Cherifer Growth Vitamins and Nature Spring since last year.

Caging in August opens for registration

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE, Cebu City (08 July 2011) — Registration has opened for the 3rd BTC Cup, now Cebu’s premier annual inter-school 3-on-3 basketball series slated here next month.

As the league enters its third year, organizers want to give more slots for younger players to experience competitive basketball in the four weekends of August 2011.

“We intend to open the league to more of Cebu’s future basketball stars who are still at 10-under and 12-under,” said Cerwin T. Eviota, BTC marketing director and the tournament commissioner. “We encourage the participating schools to send more teams in these age brackets,” he added.

Springboard

This will be the main message as the organizers will meet with the coaches and the schools’ Physical Eucation (PE) coordinators on Friday, July 15, 3pm, at Dimsum Break in BTC.

But Eviota stressed that the league remains open to teams in the 14-under and 16 under brackets as indicated in the invitations he sent to various schools. “We want the BTC Cup to become the springboard for promising basketball players to emerge and play later for the big leagues, like the CESAFI,” he pointed out.

Septembers 1st serves as the cut-off date for players in the four age categories, particularly in the year of 2000 for 10-under, 1998 for 12-under, 1996 for 14-under, and 1994 for 16-under.

This means a player in the 10-under card must not turn 11 before Sept. 1 this year, he explained. He added that a player even at 13- or 14-years-old may play in the 16-under division.

Eviota expects the 20 schools from the 2009 and 2010 series to again participate in the tournament, and hopes that other schools will now join as well. Participation is initially by invitation. But those interested may call BTC at 345-3260 between 1pm to 6pm, or send an email at activities.btc@gmail.com.

School endorsement

Participating teams must have the endorsement of the school administration, and the players must be properly certified as bonafide students and about their age.

Organizers also require the players to submit waivers signed by their parents and noted by their school head.

Some 12 schools have been participating in the BTC Cup in the past two years, while eight others either saw action in 2009 or in 2010.

Regular participants include Academ Institute, Bright Academy, Cebu Cherish School, Center for International Education, Don Bosco Technology Center, M. Zed Christian School, PAREF Springdale School, Philippine Christian Gospel School, Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, St. Alphonsus Catholic School, St. Louis School and Southwestern University.

Benthel Asia School, Maria Montessori International School, Royal Oaks International School, San Isidro (Talamban) Parish School, Sotero B. Cabahug Forum for Literacy, University of San Carlos (USC) North and South campuses, and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) also played in either 2009 or 2010.
